How to Make Gifts
summaryChildren can make their own gifts for family and friends by following the directions in a how-to-book. Besides the thoughtfulness involved in taking the time to make rather than buy a gift, your children will learn a new craft by reading.

MATERIALS: How-to book, materials for making a handicraft item. Well before holiday time or a birthday, let children browse in the crafts section at the library. Help them select projects that are appropriate for the person for whom they're intended, and ones they can manage without too much assistance. Encourage children to learn crafts from how-to books—how to tie-dye a T-shirt, how to marble paper, how to build a small bookcase, how to bake brownies. When they're not making gifts for someone else, they can make something for themselves.
