Hike on the same path at different times of the year. Show your children how nature changes. Have them write or draw what they see in a notebook.

For example: Draw pictures of tress and flowering plants. Trace fallen leaves and color them. Turn over a large stone. Draw what's underneath. Collect seeds from plants and trees. Tape them to the page. Check out a nature guide book at the library. Find pictures of the plants and animals seen along the trail, then write the their names in the log. If you see animals, list things that may explain why they are there. Are there nuts on the trees? A puddle or pond? Crumbs on a park bench?
