Hold up a familiar or popular book and begin reading the first few pages. You don't have to read word for word. Telling a story in your own words is often just as much fun for your child. If the book is too long or the words too complicated, simplify the story to sustain your child's interest. You may want to replace names of characters in the book with those your child will recognize.
