MATERIALS: Canned goods and packaged foods, spice jars

When your children want to play store, suggest that they stock soup cans or spices on make-believe grocery store shelves using the same system they do in many real stores-alphabetical order. Empty a pantry shelf of all but the soup cans. Suggest that your stock clerks make a long train by putting the cans in alphabetical order according to the first word on each label (cream of mushroom soup under C). You may have to show them how to alphabetize by the second letter if your stock of soup includes chicken noodle and clam chowder. Next have the clerks replace all the spice jars and cannisters on their shelves in alphabetical order. They may have to alphabetize all the way to the fourth letter if you spice your foods with chili powder and chives.
