Pilot Program: Club RIF

Club RIF

Club RIF pairs teens (Club RIF members) with elementary school students or other young children for periodic paired or group reading sessions. Such activities encourage friendships between the older and younger children and provide reading role models for the younger children.

Over the course of the program year, Club RIF members and the children they work with will each:

  • receive three free books;
  • have access to lending library resources; and
  • participate in paired readings and other motivational activities.

Club members are encouraged to create interactive literacy-related activities for the younger children as well as take on leadership roles in managing the Club RIF program, including budgeting, fund raising, publicity, and event planning. All participants are encouraged to reflect on their paired reading time and participate in fun, literacy activities.

Program Goals

  • Increase the amount of time children spend reading and engaging in fun, literacy-related activities.
  • Make reading a highly visible activity.
  • Increase the self-esteem of older children as readers and mentors.

Club RIF is currently in the middle of a projected three-year pilot period. The program development and first pilot year has been funded by the Best Buy Children's Foundation. Pilot programs, which included high-school, middle-school, elementary-school and Head Start students, operated in Newark, NJ, and St. Paul, MN.

RIF hopes to add new sites in subsequent years of the pilot, depending on funding availability.
