After being recruited by RIF's founder, Margaret McNamara, in 1971, Richardson later succeeded her as the organization's chairman from 1981 to 1996. During those many years of service, she exemplified the mission and spirit of RIF through her deep commitment to children, books, and the volunteers who bring the two together. With her death in July 1999, RIF lost one of its staunchest supporters. However, her dedication to the cause lives on through the Anne Richardson Volunteer of the Year Award, which was made possible by a gift from her husband, the late U.S. Attorney General and Ambassador Elliot L. Richardson. He founded the award in 1998 to honor his wife's lifetime of volunteer service and the more than 240,000 RIF volunteers whose ongoing efforts helped children become enthusiastic readers. |
