RIF Reading Planet

As part of the RIF/Coca-Cola partnership, RIF launched the RIF Reading Planet — a family-friendly website full of lots of fun interactive activities and resources for kids.

What is the RIF Reading Planet?
The RIF Reading Planet is the kids' section of RIF's Web site, www.rif.org. Created through RIF's partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, the RIF Reading Planet is a colorful online world of fun-filled book activities and literacy information for children. Originally launched in September 2001, the RIF Reading Planet was relaunched in May of 2003 with a more kid-friendly and easy-to-use design.

What kinds of information and activities are available on the RIF Reading Planet?
The RIF Reading Planet offers kids of all ages a fun and exciting online experience centered on the world of books and the joys of reading. RIF’s loveable spokes-creature, Riffington, guides children through a planet of interactive reading and writing activities, with four sections to explore. Children can search for books and submit book reviews in the “Book Zone,” get offline activity ideas and tools from the “Activity Lab,” share their opinions and write to Riffington in “Express Yourself,” and play interactive reading and writing games in the “Game Station.”

How is the RIF Reading Planet different from when it first launched?
The RIF Reading Planet, which launched in September of 2001, originally contained resources for parents in addition to activities for kids. As the site's offerings for both parents and kids expanded, it became clear that moving the resources for parents into a separate parents' section of RIF's website (available at www.rif.org) would help us make the RIF Reading Planet more kid-friendly and easier to use.

In the original version of the site, games for children were housed in an area of the site called "Fun Stuff." The new, redesigned site, launched in May 2003, has four areas for kids to explore: "Book Zone," "Activity Lab," "Express Yourself" and "Game Station."

New interactive features have been added since the RIF Reading Planet first launched. The Super Sorter, a fun quiz that kids can take to help them find books and activities just for them; Poetry Splatter, a silly poetry writing game that splatters words across the page that kids must drag into blanks in a poem; and Writers' Blocks, a writing game that allows kids from across the country to contribute parts of a collaborative story.

Additionally, all parents' resources have been moved to a new parents' section of the website which provides parents, grandparents, family members, and caregivers with articles and tips on a variety of topics including choosing good books, talking with teachers, and creating comfortable reading spaces at home. Parents can also find a great selection of books lists, family activity ideas, and expert advice.
