Reading Is Fundamental Launches “Unfortunate” Quiz
RIF Reading Planet teams up with Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Reading Planet (www.rif.org/readingplanet), an interactive website for children, this week launched a month-long trivia contest featuring the New York Times bestselling children’s book series, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
During each of the next three weeks, RIF will post a new trivia question highlighting characters and events from the series, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books. Then on Sept. 21, which is also the release date for the 11th book, The Grim Grotto, the contest culminates with a final riddle in the fourth week. Children who can crack the code will receive access to the Reading Planet’s Lemony Snicket page. The first 100 children to enter the correct code will also win a copy of Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography, provided by HarperCollins.
“A goal of the RIF Reading Planet is to engage children with a variety of fun reading, writing and book-themed activities,” said Heidi Okla, director of online communications at RIF. “Features like our Lemony Snicket trivia contest provide new ways for kids to get really excited about reading.”
The Series of Unfortunate Events books follow the unlucky adventures of the Baudelaire children, three orphans put into the care of a greedy, villainous Count Olaf who is most interested in the children’s inheritance. The series has also spawned a feature film, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which stars Jim Carrey and opens in theaters nationwide Dec. 17.
Features on the Reading Planet’s Lemony Snicket page will include an exclusive interview with author Lemony Snicket, book reviews, movie photos and more.
The RIF Reading Planet, funded through RIF’s partnership with The Coca-Cola Company, is the child’s section of the larger RIF website (www.rif.org). Aimed at children ages 5 to 12 and updated weekly, the advertising-free site offers an interactive community that encourages and supports reading and writing. Through the site, kids of all ages can join the free RIF Reading Planet Club; design their own homepage; and find writing contests, reading games and activities and booklists.
Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life.
