Reading is Fundamental is seeking a highly seasoned , strategic and operationally-oriented business partner to serve as its Chief Financial Officer. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO is a key member of the senior leadership team providing input and guidance on strategic financial, operational and governance issues while supervising the work of the Controller and Vice President of Operations. The CFO also oversees compliance with laws and regulations related to federal awards, governance and statutory reporting. The CFO works closely with the senior leadership team to maintain an accounting environment reflective of the structure of RIF’s work and leads the annual and periodic budget development and forecasting processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and provide guidance to the Controller and Vice President of Operations.
  • Serve as a member of the senior leadership team to participate in strategic planning as well as operational and tactical decision-making.
  • Provide guidance to management and staff on the application of generally accepted accounting principles and on matters of internal control.
  • Evaluate and monitor the operation of business systems to ensure the most appropriate tools are being used and operating effectively to support the work of the organization.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget process in coordination with the CEO and department heads, including presentation of materials to the Board.
  • Oversee the monthly closing process and preparation of financial reporting for the Board, CEO and department heads, including departmental and project budget to actual reports.
  • Support development of project budgets for corporate-funded programs, federal grant applications, and private foundation proposals.
  • Oversee external financial and compliance reporting, including grant reporting to funders and charitable registrations.
  • Oversee and coordinate the annual financial statement audit and tax preparation process, including coordination with the Finance/Audit Committee and Board and the External Auditors
  • Ensure compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance for the administration of federal awards, including application of cost principles and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee and monitor compliance with all tax, charitable registration, and other governmental reporting requirements.
  • Serve as executive lead in supporting the Finance, Audit and Investment Committees of the Board, guiding agendas, managing information flow, and ensuring timely follow-up to any issues arising during board discussions.
  • Oversee coordination of board logistics and compliance matters, including conflict of interest, workplace diversity, and other charity watchdog certifications.
  • Participate in and provide analytic support to strategic planning activities with RIF staff and Board of Directors.
  • Support CEO in reporting/analytical tasks and other projects as requested.

Knowledge, Skill and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance, CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Fifteen (15) plus years’ experience working in accounting/finance roles with progressive growth in both management and responsibilities.
  • Ideal candidate will have exposure to both nonprofit and commercial accounting and reporting requirements, with at least five (5) to seven (7) years’ nonprofit experience.
  • Experience and capability in developing and using spreadsheet applications of intermediate or advanced complexity is required.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with automated accounting systems and other web-based complementary tools for expenses management, time-keeping and payroll processing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience of presenting before senior management and Boards.
