Every fall, John Borne goes hunting for deer with his grandfather to shoot enough deer to feed the family over the long Minnesota winter. But this year, John's grandfather is dying, and he must go alone. He tracks a doe, but this year, he finds killing much more difficult. In the end, he realizes that he cannot shoot her.
