Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

At Arlington National Cemetery, special guards called sentinels keep watch at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Every step they take and every turn they make is done to honor the soldiers who died without their names being known. The sentinels stand guard in every kind of weather, day and night, never stopping—not even once—since July 2, 1937. It’s one of the hardest and most important jobs in the entire army, and only the most dedicated soldiers earn it. Everything they do must be perfect, because it is all for the Unknowns.
