The 6 (+1) Syllable Types: Resource Handout

This resource introduces the six syllable types plus a “+1” category for leftover (odd and schwa) syllables to help students break multisyllabic words into manageable chunks. Each type includes clear definitions and examples to support decoding and word recognition.

Use it in whole group, small group, or intervention settings to strengthen explicit phonics instruction and build confidence with unfamiliar words. The “leftovers” section reinforces that not all syllables follow standard patterns. Srong readers stay flexible when decoding.
