Use this K-W-L chart individually or as a class to activate students’ thinking as they begin reading a new book. Show your students the title and cover of the book and introduce the topic. Then ask students to think about what they might already know about the book topic to complete the “What I Know” column. Encourage students to brainstorm what they want to learn through reading the book and complete the “What I Want to Know” column. As students read the book, instruct them to revisit their questions and answer them in the “What I Learned” column.
