So You Think You Want a Pet Rabbit?
Rabbits can make great pets. They are soft, cute, and funny. Do you want a pet rabbit? They are a big responsibility. Do you have what it takes to keep a rabbit?
Most rabbits live between 8–12 years. They need a large cage with soft bedding. They need food, hay, vegetables, and a constant supply of fresh water.
Rabbits need a lot of exercise. They need to hop around for at least a few hours each day. They like to play with toys, but they don’t need special toys. They are happy to play with a tube of toilet paper.
You must feed and give your rabbit fresh water every day. You must keep your rabbit’s cage clean, otherwise it can get sick.
Rabbits like to chew. Their front teeth never stop growing and they need to chew to grind down their teeth. They will chew on anything including your furniture or electric wires. You need to make sure they can’t chew on something that can hurt them. Give your rabbit wood to chew on for this purpose.
What kind of rabbit do you want? There are many different breeds. There are giant breeds, regular-size breeds, and dwarfs. Dwarfs are the smallest.
Some giant breeds of rabbit can grow very big—up to four feet long. Dwarfs are very small and usually have small ears.
Some rabbits have ears that stand up and others have ears that flop down. A rabbit with floppy ears is called a lop.
Angora rabbits have a lot of hair. People cut their hair and use it to make sweaters.
Rabbits come in different colors. Some are orange, brown, silver, black, or white. Some rabbits are multicolored, too. Others are albino.
Do you still want a rabbit? Do you have the time to take care of it? If you do, you will be happy with your new pet rabbit.
