How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow

Written by Monica Sweeney and Illustrated by Feronia Parker Thomas

The Sun and the Clouds were the best of friends. They worked side by side every day—warming the world, helping gardens grow, and painting the sky with bright, beautiful rainbows. But one morning they had a big argument. They turned their backs on each other and refused to share the sky. And without the Sun and the Clouds together, the rainbows disappeared. Soon the colors began to fade from flowers, houses, clothes—everything—until the whole Earth turned gray. Everything except one tiny forgotten box of crayons hiding in a school desk.

The crayons knew they had to help. They marched out into town and drew the brightest rainbows they could. They colored sidewalks, walls, and windows, hoping someone—anyone—would notice. But no one did. The world stayed gray.

So the crayons came up with a bold plan. They gathered all their strength, all their colors, and worked together to draw the biggest, most dazzling rainbow the world had ever seen. They hoped it would be bright enough to catch the Sun’s eye, soft enough to warm the Clouds’ heart, and strong enough to bring their friendship—and all the world’s colors—back again.
