Sam can hardly wait to go shopping with his mom. It’s Chinese New Year, and his grandparents have given him lucky money—bright red envelopes called leisees (lay-sees). This year, Sam is finally old enough to choose how he wants to spend it. And the best part? He gets to spend his lucky money in his favorite place: Chinatown.

Sam imagines all the things he might buy… until he realizes his grandparents’ gift isn’t enough for the things he really wants. His excitement fades, and disappointment creeps in. His mom reminds him that lucky money is a special gift and that he should be grateful, but Sam still feels let down.

Then, something unexpected happens. A surprise encounter with a stranger helps Sam see his lucky money—and the meaning of giving—in a whole new way.
