Build Foundational Literacy Skills with RIF

Strong readers develop multiple skills that work together. This October, RIF is highlighting classroom resources across six essential areas of literacy instruction. Educators can use these tools individually to target a specific skill or combine them to create connected literacy experiences.

Phonological Awareness

Building Skills Step by Step

Before children can connect sounds with printed letters, they need opportunities to hear, recognize, and work with the sounds in spoken language.

This month, explore RIF’s Progression of Phonological Awareness Skills video for an overview of how these important skills develop and build upon one another. From recognizing words and rhymes to working with syllables and individual sounds, the video highlights the progression of skills that helps prepare emerging readers for reading success.

Use these resources to help students:

  • Recognize and work with words in spoken language
  • Hear and identify rhyming words
  • Break words into syllables and smaller sound parts
  • Recognize and manipulate individual sounds in words

Understanding how these skills build over time can help educators provide intentional, developmentally appropriate support as students strengthen their phonological awareness.

Phonics

Understanding the Six Syllable Types

Phonics helps students understand the relationship between sounds and written letters and patterns, giving them tools to decode unfamiliar words with increasing independence.

This month, explore RIF’s Six Syllable Types resource which introduces the six common syllable types and helps educators support students in recognizing patterns within words.

Use this resource to help students identify syllable types, break longer words into manageable parts, and apply their knowledge of spelling patterns to decode unfamiliar and increasingly complex words with confidence.

Fluency

Supporting Reading Fluency

Fluent reading connects word recognition with comprehension. As students become more accurate and automatic readers, they can devote more attention to understanding and engaging with what they read.

RIF's Supporting Reading Fluency resource provides educators with strategies for helping students strengthen fluency through meaningful reading practice.

Use this resource to support:

  • Reading accuracy Appropriate pacing
  • Expression and phrasing
  • Repeated practice with connected text
  • Increased confidence when reading aloud

Pair fluency practice with books students enjoy to help repeated reading feel purposeful and engaging.

Vocabulary

Tier 2 Vocabulary Guide

A strong vocabulary gives students greater access to the texts, conversations, and ideas they encounter throughout the school day.

October's Vocabulary feature is RIF's Tier 2 Vocabulary Guide, designed to help educators support students as they learn high-utility words that appear across subjects, genres, and contexts.

Use the guide to help students encounter new words in meaningful contexts, discuss their meanings, and practice applying vocabulary through reading, speaking, and writing.

Building vocabulary across the curriculum can help students develop both stronger comprehension and greater confidence communicating their ideas.

Comprehension

Graphic Organizers

Understanding a text requires readers to actively organize ideas, make connections, identify important information, and reflect on what they have read.

October's Comprehension resources feature RIF's Graphic Organizers, which give students visual tools for capturing and organizing their thinking before, during, and after reading.

Depending on the text and learning objective, educators can use graphic organizers to help students:

  • Identify key details and main ideas
  • Organize information from a text
  • Make connections between ideas
  • Compare characters, events, or concepts
  • Prepare for classroom discussions and written responses

Use these tools with October reading selections, including fall and Hispanic Heritage Month texts, to extend comprehension beyond the final page.

Tips for Social & Classroom Engagement

Classroom Ideas

  • Build a Literacy Skills Station Rotation: Create stations based on several of October's literacy pillars. Students might practice rhyming at a phonological awareness station, decode words at a phonics station, explore vocabulary at another, and respond to a text at a comprehension or writing station.

  • Create a Helping Our Community Reading Wall: As students read throughout October, invite them to add examples of characters helping their communities, one another, or the environment. Discuss how small actions can lead to meaningful change.

  • Turn Read-Alouds Into Skill Builders: Choose a favorite October read-aloud and revisit it throughout the week with a different literacy focus. Explore vocabulary one day, practice fluent reading with a passage another day, and finish with comprehension discussion and a written response.

  • Start a Classroom Word Collection: Invite students to collect interesting Tier 2 words they discover in October books and lessons. Display the words in the classroom and challenge students to use them in conversations and writing throughout the month.
