Scales (4th Grade Below)

Marta was nervous. Shelley had invited her to go to her lake house for the weekend. Mom and Dad had said yes! But a lake meant swimming, and Marta had never gone swimming before.

The car pulled up to the house. Marta thought it looked beautiful. There was a big porch with flowers in front. There were lots of green, leafy trees. And there, in the distance, Marta could see the lake.

Shelley jumped out of the car. “Come on, Marta!” she called. She ran upstairs with her backpack. She opened it and took out a swimsuit. “First swim of the weekend!”

Pegasus (4th Grade At Level)

Can you imagine a horse with wings? Ancient Greek mythology tells stories about a flying horse. His name was Pegasus. He was a white stallion with big white wings.

Pegasus was the child of the sea god Poseidon. His mother was Medusa, a gorgon with snakes for hair. When the hero Perseus cut off Medusa’s head, Pegasus was born.

According to legend, a man named Bellerophon captured Pegasus. Bellerophon loved to ride Pegasus. They had a lot of adventures together. In one adventure, Bellerophon fought the fire-breathing Chimera. He won the battle with help from Pegasus.

The Huma Bird (4th Grade Above)

Farah looked out the window. She was tired of listening to the grown ups talk. She wished she had a brother or a sister. She wished she had cousins. Then these family gatherings wouldn’t be quite so boring.

Besides being bored, Farah was worried. She had a project due tomorrow in her social studies class. She had to stand up in front of the class and talk about a mythological creature. She was planning to tell them about the Huma bird.
