Leveled Reading Passage: Cinder Eddie (Medium)

What if Cinderella Was a Boy?

Cinder Eddie was poor. He lived with his stepfather and stepbrothers. They were mean to him. They were also lazy. They made him do all the cooking and cleaning. They made him sleep on the floor by the fireplace.

A letter arrived from the queen. It invited them to come to a ball. It invited everyone in the house to come to the ball. Cinder Eddie could go, too. But first he had to do his chores. Then he had to help his stepfather and stepbrothers get ready. He sewed their suits, shined their shoes, and cleaned up after them.

They got a letter. It was from the queen. It asked them to come to a ball.

Cinder Eddie helped them get ready. He sewed their suits. He shined their shoes.

He cleaned the house.

They were ready for the ball. Cinder Eddie was not. He had to clean. He had to cook. They left without him.

Leveled Reading Passage: A Sci-Fi Book Review (Hard)

When I was a kid, I read some of the books in this book series out of order. I started with the third book, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, which I loved, followed by A Wrinkle in Time. I recall preferring A Swiftly Tilting Planet more, likely because it had a moonlight-drinking flying unicorn in it (I’ve always loved horses). But after rereading A Wrinkle in Time, I’ve fallen in love once again with Madeline L’Engle’s captivating book series about the Murry family.

Leveled Reading Passage: Troll’s Toll: The True Story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff (Medium)

You probably know the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. It’s about three goats. Each goat is bigger than the next. The goats want to cross a bridge. A troll owns the bridge. He won’t let them pass. They trick the troll so they can cross the bridge.

Well, let me tell you. That was my bridge. Those goats were bad goats. This is my version of the story. This is what really happened.

I built that bridge. It was mine. You had to pay a toll to cross it. That is how I made money. A lot of bridges charge tolls.
