What Is a Books for Ownership Book Celebration Event?
Imagine walking into a room filled with books and getting to choose the one that catches your attention most. Maybe it’s about your favorite animal, a new adventure, a graphic novel, or a story that reminds you of yourself. Then, instead of returning it, you get to take it home and keep it.
That’s the idea behind a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Books for Ownership book celebration event.
Books for Ownership is RIF’s flagship reading program, bringing the excitement of book choice and ownership directly to children in schools and communities across the country.
What Happens at a Books for Ownership Event?
At the heart of every Books for Ownership event is a simple experience: children get to choose their own books and take them home to keep.
The experience is designed to feel like a celebration of reading. Books of various genres, topics, and interests are displayed so children can browse, pick up different titles, look through the pages, and take their time to find the right fit. With classmates, educators and volunteers sharing in the excitement, the event creates a welcoming environment where children can explore their interests and experience the joy of choosing a book that is completely their own.
Depending on the school, community, or partner hosting the event, the day may also include read-alouds by featured authors, literacy activities, appearances from mascots and special guests, or other experiences that make reading feel exciting. Students often also take home additional reading engagement materials that drive their excitement around the day, which may include a colorful RIF tote bag, filled with a bookmark, activity or coloring sheet, and bookplates to label their new books as their very own.
Why Does Book Ownership Matter for Kids?
For many children, having books of their own is not a given. Sixty-one percent of children living at or below the poverty line have no books at home.
Books for Ownership helps change that by putting books directly into children’s hands and giving them something that is truly theirs.
A story can be read that night, revisited weeks later or shared with a sibling or caregiver. Over time, book distributions can help children build personal home libraries filled with stories and subjects they choose themselves.
That means the impact doesn't end when a child leaves the event. Each book creates another opportunity to read, explore, and connect at home.
How Do Books for Ownership Events Build Home Libraries?
Books for Ownership events help children begin building personal libraries that they can continue to enjoy long after the event ends. Having books at home makes it easier for children to explore their interests, practice reading at their own pace, and incorporate stories as a regular part of everyday life.
It also gives children the chance to reread their favorite books. Each time children return to a familiar story, they can notice something new, strengthen their understanding, build vocabulary, and develop greater confidence and fluency. A favorite book does not stop being useful after the first read, which is one of the benefits of giving children books they can keep and revisit whenever they choose.
The advantages of home libraries can extend even further. Research highlighted by RIF found that children with 100 or more books at home have about a 90% chance of completing ninth grade, compared with just 30% for children with no books at home. This reinforces why consistent access to books at home can be so important for young readers.
Whether a child is discovering a new interest, sharing a book with a sibling, or picking up a favorite story for the tenth time, having books of their own creates more opportunities for reading to become part of everyday life. Books for Ownership events help make more of those moments possible.

Books for Ownership events are also made possible by the companies, organizations and community members who help bring the experience to life.
Volunteers can get involved before the event by unpacking and organizing books, setting up displays, and preparing the space so children can easily explore their options. On the day of the event, volunteers may welcome students, help them browse books, support literacy activities, and share in the excitement as children make their selections.

Together, RIF, local partners, and volunteers create an engaging experience that celebrates reading while helping more children bring books of their very own home.
How Long Has RIF Been Running Books for Ownership?
Books for Ownership has been at the heart of RIF’s work since the organization was founded in 1966.
Over the past 60 years, RIF has worked alongside schools, educators, community organizations, corporate partners, and volunteers to expand access to books and reading opportunities nationwide. Every Books for Ownership event begins with a child exploring their options and asking: Which book do I want to read?
And it ends with that child walking away with a book of their very own, and another opportunity to become a lifelong reader.
