Increasing book equity and fostering a love of reading (with Susan Brady)

The Be Podcast Network, an organization of more than four dozen engaging shows dedicated to education, and Reading Is Fundamental are partnering during National Literacy Month to share high-impact conversations about literacy with more than 40 unique episodes featuring conversations about the state of children’s literacy nationwide, best practices for reading instruction and engagement, strategies to foster the joy of reading in school and at home, and much more.

Dr. Karen Dudek-Brannan invited Susan Brady, a reading specialist from Illinois and one of RIF’s Middle School Family Literacy Initiative’s program coordinators, to De Facto Leaders to discuss how she’s helped her community get access to books and extracurricular activities that support literacy.

In this conversation, Susan shares:

  • Are reading teachers getting the pre-service training they need to critically evaluate research and implement instructional practices
  • Relying a curriculum versus leveraging a curriculum to guide your practice
  • How to start a book club and get students excited about reading
  • Where to find inexpensive or free books for schools and families
  • Navigating logistical and equity issues when hosting community events and running extracurriculars
